Are NVX subwoofers good? (Buy Or Avoid?)
Scientists found one interesting fact about bass music. They found bass inspires confidence and power in people who listen to it. And yes, what better tool to enjoy such bass than a quality subwoofer? While many subwoofers litter the market, have you tried out NVX subwoofers? If not, are they a brand you should consider trying?
NVX subwoofers present outstanding quality for their price. NVX models like the N-Series, Vc-Series, Vs-Series, and QBUS-Series offer premium sound quality and performance. Indeed, NVX’s premium tinsel leads (high-excursion) and embossed rubber magnet boot elongate the subwoofer’s lifespan. Also, NVX’s ferrite magnet motors – best seen in the N-series – give these subwoofers power-handling capabilities not common in subs of this low-price category.
NVX is one speaker manufacturer who has demonstrated keen attention to the tiny details. But then, how well do their subwoofers perform? How strong are they? What power can you expect from them? And lastly, how much should you budget for an NVX subwoofer?
These are some of the exciting details we cover in this guide.
Who makes NVX subwoofers, and where?
NVX is wholly American-made. Not the oldest of speaker manufacturers, NVX was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 2011. A brainchild of Nathaniel Victor, NVX has grown into the Sonic Electronix over the years.
NVX materials are sourced from across the globe, but design and assemblage are exclusively conducted in the United States.
NVX is one of the few American subwoofer manufacturers that don’t leverage dealers. Perhaps their direct-to-customer distribution system explains why they are so cheap since there are no middlemen in the network milking your dollars.
What types of subwoofers does NVX produce?
Over the last decade, NVX has built its brand around four major offerings. These are the N-Series, Vc-Series, Vs-Series, and QBUS-Series.
Let us tell you more about each category.
N-Series
We will say the high-energy ferrite magnet motor technology is what we like best about NVX’s N-series subwoofers. One of the latest innovations to emerge from the NVX stables, the ferrite magnet design significantly boosts the power handling in the N-Series.
We further see the ferrite magnet motor at work in high-excursion applications, where it improves voice management.
Vc-Series
The Vc-series have remarkable versatility. Seamlessly integrating with your home cinema, these subs have top-grade accuracy in the bass sounds they emit.
Such bass accuracy can be attributed to the paper cone design and the surround foam quality. For these series, the paper cone is made from woven fiber and is compressed for tighter bass delivery.
Combined with a streamlined high-roll surround, the Vc-series uncommonly suppress cone distortion. We were further impressed by how well the Vc-Series kept the cone distortions down when the volumes were raised.
Vs-Series
The Vs-Series caught our admiration, with particular emphasis on the luxuriousness of its bass delivery, response accuracy, and top-class sound press levels.
These subwoofers are fitted with a custom PP dust and non-pressed paper cone. These enhanced the loud the sounds dispersed from the subwoofer were.
We also enjoyed the high excursion levels. This was majorly courtesy of the foam surround design. In this case, it was blended and high roll.
Notably, NVX Vs-Series can deliver a peak of 12mm (Xmax).
QBUS-Series
The QBUS-series are kitted with variable bass boost, ported enclosure, and wired remote bass control. These boosted the power and overall performance of these woofers.
Sound Quality
One way to tell quality subwoofers is the surrounding movement. Specifically, how aligned is the internal movement with the outward movement?
NVX subwoofers demonstrate top-class symmetrical movement (between the surround’s external and internal movement). We saw this in the N-series subs.
This capability was possible thanks to the surround being made from high-excursion foam. This means for the NVX N-series you are getting top value (in sound delivery and performance) for your money.
We must also commend the custom basket design we saw in some subwoofers. Featuring stamped steel built, the basket substantially enhanced airflow in the motor.
This resulted in the woofers enjoying superior cone control over conventional basket designs. We also saw tangible decreases in back-wave interference.
Durability
NVX subwoofers are built to last. You see this in these subwoofers’ tinsel lead and magnet boot design.
NVX showed they cared about the supposedly negligible details in how they attached their tinsel leads.
Repeatedly, we have seen subwoofer manufacturers hastily attaching the leads to the top of the spider. This makes the attachment weak and vulnerable.
In NVX, the tinsel leads are carefully attached to each fold’s basin. To further improve the allowable excursion range, NVX allowed some slack in the tinsel attachment.
This means you get more robust and reliable subwoofers that also don’t compromise on their sonic output.
When talking about durability, we must mention NVX’s magnet enclosure. Guarded in an embossed rubber boot, the magnet faces a minimal risk of corrosion since it is not exposed.
The rubber boots also reduce the tendency of the magnet to chip.
Performance and power
Most of the NVX subwoofers we saw had non-pressed cones. The cones uniquely integrate paper fibers renowned for their lightweight design.
Such ultra-light cones deliver premium bass effects, ensuring the tone delights the audience. The lightweight cone materials also have a hand in superior responsiveness in NVX subwoofer performance when you raise the volume.
The aluminum voice coil in NVX subwoofers is a major stakeholder in the superior power capacities of these subwoofers.
Thanks to such voice coils, NVX subs enjoy faster heat dissipation. This means your subwoofer can drive more power for lengthier durations without melting – or even burning in the worst case.
And here is the sweeter part. The biggest NVX subwoofers in the VS series – specifically the NVX VSW154v2 and VSW152v2 – have high-grade power handling capacity.
Effectively, they work well even with 750W RMS! This is large because these subwoofers are equipped with enormous 100oz magnets.
Price
As we said, NVX subwoofers are some of the cheapest we have seen. It is impressive how these subwoofers manage to deliver such bass performance while their competitors cost twice and more.
Specifically, you can get a functional NVX subwoofer for as cheap as $59. The most expensive we have seen in NVX’s collection is the NSW102v2.
That subwoofer goes for $800. Is it worth it?
We will say yes, as this sub features dual 2-ohm impedance and can deliver up to 700watts RMS.
Warranty
NVX operates a 1-year warranty policy for every subwoofer you purchase from them. This warranty package covers repairs and replacements due to defects in craftsmanship and design.
What if you are not comfortable with the NVX subwoofer you bought?
NVX allows you to return any subwoofer you purchased within 60 days of purchase if you can prove the product is defective.
Note that NVX doesn’t exclusively cover the cost of returning such defective NVX subwoofers. But then this manufacturer generously offers a discounted FedEx Shipping Label package if you are returning an NVX subwoofer bought in the United States.
